Lui, il joue de l’orgue, sculpte de vieux ossements et parcourt les champs d’un pas boiteux. Elle, elle virevolte entre oies, poules, brebis, monte aux arbres, accroche aux branches des étranges poupées, arpente les lieux en compagnie d’un chien, fabrique de curieuses installations pour jouer avec les animaux. En petite sorcière à l’énergie débordante, elle est la princesse de ce royaume. Carmine Grimaldi, actuellement « fellow member » du Film Study Center de l’Université d’Harvard, s’est bien approprié l’expérience du Sensory Ethnography Lab et la met en pratique dans ce portrait délicat d’un père et sa fille. Court documentaire magique, dont l’atmosphère rappelle les romans de Mark Twain (ou de Stephen King : cela dépend du point de vue…), one of the roughs, a kosmos est extrêmement touchant, non seulement pour la liberté avec laquelle le cinéaste capte l’intimité de ses personnages, mais aussi pour la place, d’une tendresse distante, de sa caméra.

A farm deep within the United States, at nightfall. A bearded and long-haired man, with a feverish look. A wild, red-haired girl. He plays the organ, sculpts old bones and walks around the fields with a limp. She jumps around between the geese, chickens and sheep, climbs trees, hangs strange dolls off branches, surveys the site in the company of a dog, and builds odd installations to play with the animals. Like a little witch with boundless energy, she is the princess of this kingdom. Carmine Grimaldi, currently a Fellow at Harvard University’s Film Study Center, has appropriated the experiments of the Sensory Ethnography Lab and put it into practice in this delicate portrait of a father and his daughter. A magical short documentary, whose atmosphere is reminiscent of the novels of Mark Twain (or of Stephen King: it depends on your point of view…), one of the roughs, a kosmos is extremely touching, not only for the freedom with which the filmmaker captures the intimacy of his characters, but also for the distant tenderness with which the camera is positioned.

Sie springt zwischen Gänsen, Hühnern und Schafen herum, klettert auf Bäume, befestigt seltsame Puppen an den Ästen, erkundet in Begleitung eines Hundes die Umgebung und bastelt interessante Vorrichtungen, um mit den Tieren zu spielen. Wie eine kleine, vor Energie überbordende Hexe ist sie die Prinzessin dieses Königreichs. Carmine Grimaldi, derzeit «Fellow member» des Film Study Center der Universität Harvard, hat sich die Erfahrungen aus dem Sensory Ethnography Lab zu eigen gemacht und setzt sie in diesem zarten Porträt eines Vaters und seiner Tochter um. one of the rough, a kosmos ist ein kurzer, magischer Dokumentarfilm, der mit seiner Stimmung an die Romane von Mark Twain (oder, je nach Blickpunkt, von Stephen King) erinnert und durch die Freiheit, mit der die Filmemacherin die Welt dieser Personen erfasst, und die distanzierte Zärtlichkeit ihrer Kamera unter die Haut geht.
