Las de son travail à l’agence pour l’emploi à Paris, Alain prend congé et part dans le Massif central. Au gré des rencontres, on découvre avec lui une France invisible, où, chacun à leur manière, des « petites gens » tentent d’échapper à la société consumériste à travers des modes de vie différents, loin des centres urbains : jeunes paysans refusant le productivisme agricole, idéalistes érigeant l’autonomie en principe de vie, enfants du pays cultivant la simplicité et le rapport à la terre… Cohérent avec son propos, le film invente son propre système, entre fiction et documentaire, avec un acteur pince-sans-rire, des habitants jouant leur propre rôle, et un humour décalé. Sans rhétorique, les cinéastes en profitent pour mettre en scène leur propre utopie, faite de convivialité retrouvée et d’un humanisme quotidien, où l’inconnu est un ami qu’on invite à sa table en poussant la chansonnette. Sortir des sentiers battus, prendre des chemins de traverse, se réinventer à son échelle dans un monde en mutation : c’est l’exhortation de ce ‘road-movie’ salutaire et profondément politique.

Weary of his work at a Paris job centre, Alain resigns and heads for the Massif Central. As he meets different people, we discover an almost invisible France, where “ordinary” people try to escape from consumer society by adopting different lifestyles, far from the madding crowd: young farmers saying no to “industrial” agriculture, idealists advocating self-sufficiency, locals cultivating simplicity and a healthy relationship with the soil… In keeping with its intention, the film invents its own – part fiction, part documentary – system, with an ironically witty actor, locals playing themselves, and a quirky kind of humour. The filmmakers take the opportunity to propose their own modest utopia, consisting of down-to-earth conviviality and humanity, where a stranger is a friend you invite home for a meal. Get off the beaten track, try some unconventional paths, reinvent yourself in a changing world: this is the invitation of this heart-warming and deeply political road-movie.

Die Filmemacher nutzen die fehlende Rhetorik, um ihre eigene Utopie zu inszenieren, die auf wiedergefundener Geselligkeit und einem Humanismus im Alltag fusst, wo Unbekannte Freunde sind, die man an seinen Tisch bittet. Neue Wege gehen, auch mal querfeldein, sich in einer Welt im Wandel neu orientieren: Das ist der Mahnruf dieses höchst politischen Feel-Good-Roadmovies.
